Opener "Children of a Lesser God," begins as a metalcore anthem but halfway through travels afield into proggy alt metal, complete with orchestral overlays. Of Truth and Sacrifice however pushes against the mediocrity of Wanderer and reaffirms Heaven Shall Burn’s place as a melodic death metal staple as the record’s first half launches into a clinical (a bit more on that later) display of up-tempo, well-executed melodic death. Four years after The Wanderer and a long two-year hiatus, Heaven Shall Burn sound recharged, ambitious, angry, confused at the state of the world, and musically restless. Of Truth & Sacrifice is a double-length, 19-track, 97-minute epic. "Thoughts and Prayers" is a savage indictment of gun control policy and an industry that pursues profit no matter the cost to victims. "Of Truth and Sacrifice" certainly contains plenty of red meat for the faithful, but it's also a brave and occasionally startling piece of work from self-evident masters of the form.
